“Brigadier General Mohammad Suleiman was shot by an unidentified sniper on the coast of Syria's Tartous port on Friday,” Lebanon's An Nahar daily reported two days later. According to the report, Suleiman was a close military aid to President Bashar al-Assad and the officer in charge of liaison with Lebanon's Hezbollah movement. No group has claimed responsibility for the assassination as of yet. Some news outlets, however, have suggested that Israel may be behind the attack, by drawing a link between the incident and the assassination of senior Hezbollah commander Imad Mugniyah, who was killed in an attack back in February.
