Up to 50,000 security personnel were deployed in and around Bangkok yesterday to prevent demonstrators paralysing the city this weekend and toppling the Government.

The regime is braced for unrest, and has prepared water cannon, sound-wave machines, teargas and batons in case protests turn violent. Government insiders say that there are also fears of gun and mortar attacks, and political leaders will be moved to a military command centre during the rallies.

Organisers are hoping to bring a million people on to the streets to protest against what they see as a regime — comprising a clique of military officers, allied with the “aristocracy” and the governing Democrat Party — that has unfairly brought down a series of populist governments, beginning with that of Thaksin Shinawatra, a former Prime Minister.

The Government has invoked the Internal Security Act, giving security forces the power to introduce curfews and restrict gatherings.

At a motorway checkpoint at Wang Noi, 40 miles (64km) northeast of Bangkok — and a potential flashpoint in the build-up to Sunday’s biggest rally in central Bangkok — police and soldiers clad in full riot gear searched cars, pick-up trucks and buses for weapons and checked passenger and vehicle documentation as people from the rural northeast converged to drive to the capital.

Three vehicles filled with of protesters from the United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD), dressed in their trademark red shirts and waving enormous flags, were eventually waved through.The protest began at red-shirt gatherings across the nation at 12.12pm yesterday, heralded by applause and the sound of Buddhist gongs and chanting.

At Lak Si, on the edge of Bangkok, about 2,000 red-shirt activists cheered and waved as their demonstration began. Chawarit Chawangkiet, 37, a computer programmer, said that he felt compelled to joined the protest because he wanted political reform. “I want to fight for democracy,” he said. “This country is controlled by invisible forces.”

The red-shirt leader Weng Tojirakarn, who was watching over the Lak Si gathering, told The Times that the aim was to fight for a system in which all people were treated equally, elections were called and the people allowed to decide the political future of the country. He said that there was an need to "end the double standard which is so backward".

UDD leaders say that hundreds of thousands of rural poor, especially, especially from the north and northeast, are expected to join the protest. Sean Boonpracong, a spokesman, said that the Government was doing everything it could to deter protesters from coming to Bangkok, including setting up huge checkpoints on highways, threatening to shut petrol stations, banning farm vehicles and out-of-state taxis and invoking the draconian ISA.

UDD leaders say that they want to change an age-old system of privilege that entrenches the wealth of the urban elite. “Our goal is dissolution of Parliament. If dissolution was announced tomorrow, there would be no movement,” Mr Boonpracong said.

Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi airport is on alert with authorities determined to avoid a repeat of its occupation in 2008, when royalist yellow-shirt supporters, aligned with the Government, seized it in protest.

Mr Thaksin, speaking from exile in Dubai, urged supporters to join the protest. He is expected to address the rally via video-link.Abhisit Vejjajiva, the Prime Minister, has said that fresh elections, and his resignation, were possible to quell dissent. “I will not hold on to power,” he told Parliament this week.

JAKARTA, Indonesia – Thousands of followers of a conservative Islamic group held peaceful demonstrations Sunday in several Indonesian cities against the planned visit of President Barack Obama.

Witnesses and police said members of the Islamic group Hizb ut-Tahrir protested in East Java's provincial capital of Surabaya, South Sulawesi's capital of Makassar and three other cities. The group, an international network which believes Muslims should unite in a single global state governed by Islamic law, urged the Indonesian government to reject the American leader's trip, scheduled for late March.

"We know Obama spent his childhood in Indonesia, but as president his policy contradicts the people's interests in Indonesia," protest organizer Nasrudin said in Makassar.

Hundreds of police monitored the protests, which drew around 2,000 people outside the U.S. Consulate in Surabaya and another 2,000 in the streets of Makassar. No violence was reported. Dozens of demonstrators also rallied in the Java city of Yogyakarta, the West Kalimantan town of Pontianak and the eastern town of Mataram.

Men and women wearing black veils held up yellow banners reading "Reject the visit of Obama" as they marched in the streets of the two larger cities.

"He doesn't work for a peaceful world ... on the contrary, Obama is the same as George Bush, who has destroyed the Muslim world in Iraq and Afghanistan. Therefore we have to reject the visit of Obama to Indonesia," said Nasrudin, who, like many Indonesians, uses only one name.

Indonesia is the world's most populous Muslim nation. Most of its nearly 200 million Muslims practice a moderate form of the faith.

The country's largest Muslim organization, Nahdlatul Ulama, and its second largest, Muhamadyah, have both welcomed Obama's visit.

US defense expert P.W. Singer from the Brookings Institution talks to SPIEGEL ONLINE about the stresses that drone pilots are subjected to and the risk of emotional exhaustion and burnout. The whole experience of war is being changed by the new technology, he argues.

SPIEGEL ONLINE: Mr. Singer, are drones becoming the new form of combat?

P.W. Singer: Until recently, people looked at this as something abnormal. But drones and robotic warfare in general are actually the new normal now. We've gone from using a handful of these systems to now having around 7,000 in the air. And the US is not the only country flying them. There are drones from 43 other countries, including Great Britain, Germany and Pakistan.

SPIEGEL ONLINE: Are we entering a new era?

Singer: Yes, you can compare the impact of this with the introduction of gunpowder, the printing press or the airplane.

SPIEGEL ONLINE: Some people fear that it turns war into a video game.

Singer: To say that is far too simplistic. We're seeing a change in the very experience of war. The act of going to war used to entail you taking upon great risks. You might not come home one day. You might not see your family again. Now it's different. I heard a drone pilot explain it this way: You're going to war for one hour, and then you get in the car and drive home, and within two minutes you're sitting at the dinner table talking about your kids' homework. This is a very different experience of war.

SPIEGEL ONLINE: One drone pilot told SPIEGEL ONLINE that they suffer from just as much stress and trauma.

Singer: Yes, all this doesn't mean we're not seeing all sorts of new stressers. In the beginning we feared that drones may make the operators not really care about what they're doing. But the opposite has turned out to be true. They may almost care too much. We're seeing higher levels of combat stress among remote units than among some units in Afghanistan. We found significantly increased fatigue, emotional exhaustion and burnout. Drone operators are more likely to suffer impaired domestic relationships, too.

SPIEGEL ONLINE: What explains this stress?

Singer: There are different theories as to why. Traditional bomber pilots don't see their targets. A remote operator sees the target up close, he sees what happens to it during the explosion and the aftermath. You're further away physically but you see more. Also, the drone war takes place 24/7, 365 days a year. The war doesn't stop on Christmas. It's like being a fireman when there's a fire every single day, day after day after day. That's emotionally and physically taxing. On top of that, many units are understaffed.

SPIEGEL ONLINE: Don't drone operators have it easier, commuting home every day?

Singer: No, there's a disconnect. You're at war, and two minutes later you're changing your brain and you think about football practice with your kids. Drone units don't show as much cohesion as traditional units. The whole unit used to share the emotional experience. Now there's no "band of brothers" anymore.

SPIEGEL ONLINE: But isn't the fact that drone operators are physically safe from war the whole point? Doesn't that ease combat stress?

Singer: Not at all. I once talked to an Air Force sergeant who flew drones. She told me how they watched US soldiers on the ground being killed. They could only circle above and watch. There was nothing more they could do.

SPIEGEL ONLINE: Which consequences does the drone war have for the nations that lead them?

Singer: War used to be a very serious decision. Now we don't even declare war anymore. We don't pay war taxes, we don't buy war bonds. Now we can carry it out without having to deal with some of the consequences of sending our sons and daughters into harm's way. It also changes the way politicians think about war. You already have society's barriers against war dropping, and now you have a technology that takes the barriers to the ground.

SPIEGEL ONLINE: Are we beyond the point of no return?

Singer: The debate is just starting in Washington. There are parallels to other historical moments when there was no turning back. The automobile in 1909. Computers before 1980. The nuclear bomb in 1940s. This is much beyond an evolution, it's a revolution. This happens very rarely in history. These developments force us to ask questions of right and wrong we never had to think about before.

SPIEGEL ONLINE: Which questions?

Singer: For example the question of the public's relationship to war. The drone war is documented, downloaded, accessible for everyone. You can see the videos on YouTube. It's turning war for some into a form of entertainment. The soldiers call that "war porn." We can see more but experience less.

Unfortunately, they do not have electricity for between 14 and 16 hours a day. Israeli Historian Martin Karfeld: Israel Could Find Itself Forced To Wipe Out Europe

Noted Israeli military historian Martin Karfeld stated that Israel could find itself one day forced to exterminate the European continent using all kinds of weapons including its nuclear arsenal if it felt its demise neared, stressing that Israel also considers Europe a hostile target.

This came in a press interview broadcast by the seventh Hebrew radio and was translated on Wednesday into Arabic by the press information analysis and study center.

“We have hundreds of nuclear warheads and missiles that can reach different targets in the heart of the European continent, including beyond the borders of Rome, the Italian capital,” Karfeld said, adding that most of the European capitals would become preferred targets for the Israeli air force.

The Israeli historian reiterated Israel’s ability to destroy the whole world whenever it felt its existence would be doomed to extinction.

As for the Palestinians, the historian said that Israel at the present time pursues a specific strategy based on mass deportation of the Palestinian people and has intentions to expel all Palestinians without exception, but it is awaiting the right moment to take this step.

“Two years ago, there was only seven to eight percent of the Israelis believing in this solution towards the Palestinians and just two months ago this percentage rose amongst the Israelis to 33 percent, but today, according to a survey conducted by Gallup institute, this figure surged to 55 percent,” he noted.

The historian highlighted that Israel must take advantage of any incident that would give it a golden opportunity to expel the Palestinians as happened in Deir Yassin massacre in 1948.

Replying to a question whether Israel does not have fears of being classified as a criminal state if it expelled Palestinians, he said, “Israel is a state that does not care about what others say about it and you must remember the saying of former defense minister Moshe Dayan when he said that ‘Israel must always act as a wild dog because it should be dangerous in the eyes of others, rather than be harmed.’”

This was the rest of the night from Day 2. It was also the beginning of my three vows of sincerity. No more drinking/smoking, eating meat (unless it is made for me unknowingly), or having any type of sexual relations for at least one year and perhaps longer.

This is to demonstrate to my friends and family, as well as to myself, my sincerity in undertaking this volunteering trip around the world. I would like to prove to them that material substances and adverse temptations can be conquered through sheer will if the bearer deems so necessary.

SamiVivekananda, the prince among the modern spiritualist, said more than a centuryago, “We want to lead mankind to the place where there is neither the Vedas,nor the Bible, nor the Koran, yet this has to be done by harmonizing the Vedas,the Bible and the Koran. Mankind ought to be taught that religions are but thevaried expression of the religion, whichis oneness, so that each may choose the path that suits them best.”

Prominent religions in the world currently includeHinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, Judaism, Confucianism, Christianity, Islam,Sikhism, Zoroastrianism, Shintoism, and Baha’ism among others. The adherentsand practitioners of these religions believe in the preaching’s of therespective religious and spiritual masters. So are in the rituals.

Lifeis an experiment with body, mind, intellect and environment leading toenjoyment and playing in the value-oriented field on this earth. Destiny,death, disease and history are no respector of personalities. Bhagavad Gita preaches that every one bornmust die, and every one who dies must be reborn: “Jatasya hi dhruvam mrutyum dhruvam janma mrutasya cha”.

Religionsare to unite human race and not divide or destroy whatever may be the reasonswhether material or non-material. Spiritual Masters all over the globe forcenturies, irrespective of their religions, championed eloquently about thegoal of existence to ensure useful, purposeful and pleasant life on this planetending in peaceful death and not violent ever.

Ithas now been established that a human being is a complex combination of body,soul, mind and intellect and is subject to the environment, which can benatural, social, religious, civilisational and spiritual or a combination oftwo or more. Animal instincts like Kama(desire), Krodha (anger), Lobha (miserliness), Moha (lust), Mada (ego), Matsarya (jealousy)dominate all thoughts and deeds in all living beings including humans. In anysociety people exist with permutations and combinations of different instincts.

Spiritualenlightenment is necessary to keep such instincts in full control to attain variouslevels of mental fulfillment and satisfaction. Spirituality is above religion,secularism, morals and ethics. It speaks of universally accepted value-system,endorsed by all religions of the world at all times, for the human race to livein peace while achieving progress and prosperity leading to both physical,mental and metaphysical happiness during the life-span.

Inall religions – prominent and non-prominent – the spiritual values are surelysimilar or parallel, even though rituals and practices are different, sometimesdiametrically opposite. Yoga Vasishtaof Maharshi Vasishta or Bhagavad Gitaof Lord Krishna, or Viveka Chudamaniof Adi Sankara or Tripatika of LordBuddha or Anga of Mahavira, or Analects of Confucius, or Talmud in Judaism, or Holy Bible of Christianity, or Zenda Vesta or Zoraster, or Holy Quran of Islam, or Guru Grantha Sahib of Sikhism, preach only one thing to mankind, i.e. toachieve universal peace, love and brotherhood.

Whatall spiritual masters all over the world preached for centuries has been that “Religions may be different but God is onlyone.” In this millennium, human race is in great need of spiritual culture,which converges in attainment of peaceful co-existence of all religions andbeliefs and embraces all contours secularism professes. Thus, secularism is notnegation of religion or spirituality. Secularism has only one meaning, i.e.acceptance of all faiths, rituals and beliefs and according to recognition,respect and tolerance towards them irrespective of agreement or disagreement oftheir principles or theories to achieve salvation.

Ina secular state, a Hindu must have the right to go to the temple and must haveto the freedom to pray; a Buddhist must have the right to go to the vihara and must have the freedom to bowdown in meditation; a Jew must have the right to go to the synagogue and musthave the freedom to worship; a Christian must have the right to go the churchand must have the freedom to do the mass; a Muslim must have the right to go tothe mosque and must have the freedom to do namaz;a Sikh must have the right to go to gurudwaraand must have the freedom to pay obeisance before the Guru Grandha Sahib, etc.

Itis therefore, obvious that religions are fleeting and spiritual values areeternally secular irrespective of different forms and shapes they may assume inthe horizon of time.

Bahaifaith, one of the nascent in the world, says, “Nations and tribes of the world,who are always at war, turn your face towards unity and let the brightness ofits light shine upon you.”

HolyQuran says, “Whoever relieves a human being of grief in this world, God willrelieve him of grief on the day of the judgment.” Judaism ordains people “to dojustice, to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.” Lord Jesusproclaimed: “All human beings are children of God… Men should care and helpeach other in sorrow and distress and have sympathy to less fortunate.”

LordBuddha ordained his disciples: “Go unto lands and preach this gospel. Tell themthat the poor and the lowly, the rich and the high, are all one and that allcastes unite in this religion, as the rivers in the sea.”

LordMahavira’s spiritualism involved “universal love, compassion and sympathy forall living beings.” Confucius firmly believed: “If there be righteous in theheart, there will be beauty in character; if there is beauty in character,there will be harmony in the home; if there be harmony in the home, there willbe order in the nation; if there be order in the nation, there will be peace inthe world.”

GuruNanak Dev observed: “In this dish are placed three things – truth, harmony, andwisdom. These are seasoned with the name of God which is the basis of all;whoever eats it and relishes, will be saved.”

SwamiVivekananda, one of the leading exponents of India in spirituality, proclaimed:“The Parliament of Religions has proved to the world that holiness, purity andcharity are not the exclusive possessions of any church in the world – upon thebanner of every religion will soon be written, in spite of resistance; help andnot fight; assimilation and not destruction; harmony and peace not dissention.”

LordKrishna, in his Bhagavad Gitadeclared centuries ago his incarnation of God and observer: “I am in religionas the thread through a string of pearls. Wherever you see extraordinary powerraising and purifying humanity, know that I am there. The Hindu religion is allthings of all people and different things for different people.”

Worldspiritual leaders sprung up time and again in mankind to purify the society,preach universal spiritual and sacred values, and, in the process, get rid ofthe reigning evils, to enable human race to ascend the ladder from demonalityto divinity.

The spiritual leaders, in turn, want toensure that they enable souls to merge with God, the eternal source which isomnipotent, omnipresent and omniscient presiding over the past, present, andfuture of the universe.

Spiritualismin human history is above religion, beliefs and rituals. Spiritual masters andspirituality belong to the whole human race, irrespective of the part of theglobe they live. Spiritual masters are like candles, determined to burnthemselves to give light to the people. Therefore, resort to spiritualism alonein the coming centuries enable homosapiens to march into the future to apurposeful and blissful life to live with confidence and enlightenment.

What the banksters think of us

Anyone who has read Liar’s Poker or any number of insider accounts of major Wall Street firms knows that the big problem with the banksters isn’t merely that they’re greedy. Rather, it’s that they’re spoiled, entitled pricks who absolutely refuse to own up to their own personal failings. This attitude can be seen in these amazing transcripts where AIG traders lash out at the very taxpayers who saved their pitiful asses from being tossed out on the street:

The employees said that the corporate leaders who had driven the firm into the ground were already gone from the company. Those who had remained behind to help clean up the mess and repay the taxpayer bailout were due their compensation, they told Pasciucco.
“You made a commitment to us, and we made a commitment to you. And for anybody to look beyond that, as the politics and the media are at the moment, is missing the point,” said an employee. “You can’t expect us to just roll over and ignore that commitment because there is a bunch of immoral bigots that intend us to do something different. It’s not going to happen.”
Another was even more irate, lashing out at the public for scapegoating AIG employees. “To be honest with you, I really hope it blows up. I think the U.S. taxpayer deserves to lose a trillion dollars over this thing for the way they have behaved.”
And then he turned on politicians who had joined the anti-AIG posse. “They only care about the next election, just like we only care about the next bonus. Well, none of them cares about the country, none of us cares about the institution,” he said, adding: “They really don’t care, and I really don’t care. And frankly, if a trillion dollars gets lost, fine.”
The AIG retention bonuses have rankled many in the public because the company has received a federal rescue package of about $180 billion in loans, stock investments and other commitments from the Federal Reserve and the Treasury Department. Closing down AIG Financial Products’ trading portfolio has been vital to stemming further losses and repaying the public money.

My general reaction: Just quit, you assholes. Try taking around your résumés to other firms if you’re so convinced in your own inflated sense of self-worth. But this is just a guess — when you go in for an interview with another company, having five years’ experience of selling credit default swaps in AIG’s Financial Products division isn’t going to help you get a job. Shit, I wouldn’t hire you to vacuum my rugs or take out my garbage. Because in the end I don’t think that you guys possess any real skills that are useful outside of your own little bubble world.

There are so many reasons that frankly, it's hard to pick a place to start:

First of all.....when 28% of you brain dead fucking morons give a blithering IDIOT like Sarah Palin positive approval ratings and think she ought to run for president in 2012, it really makes me sick to know I am lumbered with that many mouth-breathing Cro-Magnons I unfortunately have to consider as my fellow countrymen....trust me.....I don't. You motherfuckers are beyond help.

And before you go thinking this is a "liberal" based rant.....that brings me to one more item on an ever-lengthening list.

Pentagon originally said Marine killed in combat

The Pentagon confirmed late Tuesday that it is investigating the death of a 24-year-old Indiana Marine after he was shot to death in Afghanistan, allegedly by several US-paid private security contractors.

The contractors, according to a fellow Marine in Afghanistan who communicated with an investigative reporter in Chicago, were Afghanis who were found with "copious amounts of opium" and had been paid by the United States as guards.

"He was killed by American Hired Local National Contractors that were high on opium the morning of the 19th," the ABC reporter quotes a friend and fellow colleague of Lance Corporal Joshua Birchfield as saying in an email message.

Lance Corporal Joshua Birchfield was killed after being shot in the head Feb. 19. The Department of Defense originally reported that he died of "small arms fire" while in combat.

But the story is apparently darker and more complex -- raising questions of whether the Pentagon originally concealed information about the Marine's death.

The Chicago Marine who tipped off the ABC reporter purportedly wrote a detailed email surrounding the circumstances of Birchfield's death. In it, he asserts that the young Marine was killed by Afghanis paid as private contractors.

"These men are armed to the teeth and supposedly here for our protection," the fellow Marine is said to have emailed. "We have been shot at by the contractors on several cases before this incident. We have been told to refrain from returning fire and attempt to identify ourselves as Marines so they stop shooting."

"They are also drug abusers," he continued. "The shooter was found to have copious amounts of wet opium on him shortly after the shooting ... we found a bag of wet opium in the compound that the contractors were using to get high."

"A mix of drugs and gray areas of loyalty between U.S. forces and Taliban seems to be the motivation behind the shooting," he added.

The Pentagon, announcing an investigation into the death on Wednesday, declined to say what exactly they were investigating.

Pentagon spokesman Geoff Morrell told the Associated Press "the military is looking into the circumstances surrounding the Feb. 19 shooting of 24-year-old Lance Cpl. Joshua Birchfield of Westville. He declined further comment."

"Maj. Carl Redding of the Marine Corps confirmed the investigation but referred additional questions to Marine Corps officials in Afghanistan," the AP added.

Investigators reportedly found the private security guards with drugs and weapons and placed several under arrest.

ABC reporter Chuck Goudie wrote about Birchfield's death in a column in the local newspaper The Daily Herald. Curiously, his column includes the caveat, "The views in this column are his own and not those of WLS-TV." WLS-TV is an ABC affiliate.

Goudies says Birchfield "was on a security patrol about a half-mile from a Marine forward operating base. About 7 a.m., as day broke, shots were fired at Birchfield's patrol team, according to members of his unit. The ambush was by U.S.-hired security guards who were supposed to be protecting a highway paving project from Taliban-installed roadside bombs."

"The contractors were able to have such proximity to a U.S. patrol because we pay them to work on our FOB (forward operating base), pave the 515 (highway), and provide security from Taliban IED (roadside bomb) implacers in the area," he says he was told.

The decision was made at a high level within the Western secret government, he says. The introduction of the Amero will be followed by a dismantling of the Federal Reserve Board, he says. Once the announcement is made, people will have exactly 30 days to convert their dollars to Ameros before the dollars become worthless.

The Western government does not want to cede control of its financial system to China so a decision was made to go with the gold-backed Amero, he says.

Of course many holders of dollars may decide to opt away from the Amero and trade their dollars for other currencies, notably the Chinese yuan and the Hong Kong dollar.

Twelve New England towns demand 9/11 reinvestigation

A new movement to reinvestigate the 9/11 attacks is gaining pace in the US. With major public support, 12 towns are set to decide whether to ask the federal government for a new independent probe.

New York is dubbed as the Empire State for its wealth and resources and is rightfully regarded as America’s most famous city, a beacon of fashion, finance and fast paced action.

New Hampshire is the Granite State of so-called self sufficiency. Less flash and cash, most famous for hosting the first U.S. presidential primary.

New York and New Hampshire are more than 200 miles apart, but for all that distance, the two US locations intersect on one issue: the 9/11 attacks. While it was in Manhattan where three buildings fell, the people of Keene, New Hampshire are pushing for a new probe to find out why.

At 81 years old, Gerhard Bedding devotes nearly all his time to the Vote for Answers campaign. Though the movement for a new 9/11 investigation began in the Big Apple, it’s seeing more success in New Hampshire.

“This is so central to the future of this country. There is no future, as far as I’m concerned, if we do not get to the bottom of this, because we steep in lies upon lies, and soon we do not know what is what anymore,” Bedding said. “I do believe truth matters.”

Apparently, so do thousands of others. Twelve towns are making a new 9/11 inquiry a ballot box issue this spring. Voters heading to the polls will vote on a non-binding resolution that supporters hope eventually sparks momentum and legislative power nationwide.

Hundreds of citizens are expressing a desire to find out “the real truth” and are attending meetings where local experts, such as physicist John Wyndam, present alternative 9/11 theories, specifically surrounding the collapse of World Trade Center Seven and the Twin Towers.

“Basically it is impossible for the top 12 stories to have crushed the lower structure with acceleration. Physically impossible and yet that is what you observe,”claimed Wyndam.

While most elected officials have ignored cries for a 9/11 probe, former Keene mayor Mike Blastos is an exception.

“The two biggest tragedies I can recall other than world wars concerning America was Kennedy’s assassination and the attack on 9/11. And they both remain completely unanswered,” Blastos said.

The 9/11 commission, like the Warren Commission, left millions of Americans doubtful over the official government’s version. Bedding withholds accusations, but demands answers.

“I do not like to speculate who did what, or who let something happening. That should be found out. Building 7 was not even mentioned in the original report. But I do know that a building that has not been hit by an airplane, such as Building 7, does not come down like perfectly controlled demolition.”

New Hampshire was the first colony to declare independence from England in 1776. Only time will tell if the first sovereign US state will be where the push for a new 9/11 investigation could prevail.
